Only an hour and 20 minutes from Kaohsiung, “Haikou Beach” (or Checheng Beach) is an excellent lesson on the nature of relativity; i.e, “the absence of standards of absolute and universal application”. Why? Because this beach in any other world would be able to capture a lot of attention; however, in the world of southern Pingtung, it is overlooked and almost regarded as naught (shall I pull out my violin?). Because of its nearby neighbors in the Kenting area, Haikou Beach is unable to shine like a star, and so, most of the time this large, yellow, sandy beach is left rather alone.
The yellow sand beach does get more than its fair share of wind, which can blow the smaller granules away and leave the larger "gravelly" stuff behind. This results in beach sand that is not as premium as, well, the stuff you find in Kenting. But at the end of the day, its still alright. |
- Things to do -
Since Haikou beach does not get a lot of traffic, it doesn't attract a lot of entrepreneurs looking for creative ways to get potential beach goers spending some money. There have been people renting out ATV rides on the here in the past, though it is not certain that they are still doing so. (it could be a seasonal thing).
For the past several years the Boutix Resort (泊逸度假酒店)was operating next to this beach, however the company has recently closed down its Taiwan operations (the hotel they operated up north in Yehliu is still open under new ownership, but the Haikou one is now closed).
Basically, there is not a whole lot going on in this corner of Pingtung, so, for the most part, you are going to have to supply your own food and entertainment if you plan a trip to Haikou Beach. Just a shot drive away, however, is the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, so if you find your not doing a good job of it, you could write down a trip to the aquarium as your "plan B".
